staycation

There is a groove
(a ditch more precisely)
in my well-loved
sofa cushion
I slide my foot into it
and it fits perfectly
every time
I smile,
spine unfurling,
at my shabby,
secret joy, singing

"Now don't that beat the hell
out of Cinderella's slipper!"

the baker's daughter

Angela
the artsy girl
down the hall
can't tell you much
about her
but what she knew
about me
could fill at least
a thousand ears

Angela
kept birthday candles
in a jar
by her door
she'd light one
whenever I'd come around
then she'd spit
on her burnt fingers, cussin'
yeah, well that's enough outta me

Now...
"Tell me what
you are
by what you wish for,
bear claw,
Are you
the icing
or
the cake?"

whirlwind

Waking, Walking, Singing, in the Next Dimension? 1979 by Morris Graves
via Magpie Tales

your road hugged
the shoulders of your
dreams and visions

you sailed along
wings silently gliding down
the nature of things

when you woke
you were hatched
blind and flightless

your senses twisted
tested, resisted.
then trusted

your path cleared
to mingle with limitless skies
free as a bird

duende

"Ponytail" by Last Exit

up
from the soles
a restless silken quake
this life
this absolute death
a serenade
unapologetic

daymark

"Lighthouse Dandelions" Jamie Wyeth

paint yourself
striped wildcat
arch your eyebrows
then jiggle the
ice, round
and round
in your jelly glass of
sunbeams

wink knowingly
as the pretty young things
come
and pirouette cleverly
at your feet
gypsy soul whisperer
father figure
candle on the water

heirloom

whisper to me
the story
of your flight
your curious days

your sacred nights
whisper to me
the story of a life you wish
for the world to hold

and I shall place it
like dandelion seeds
neath the mouth
of forever

ascension

one last broken
word
one first bite of
skin
let heaven and free will
ring
emancipation

thunderclap mistress
thirst obscene
lips parted
full
dripping sunset nectar
the moon is gold
my eyes are green

the world is radiant
jasper
the ceiling endless
aquamarine
i have bled into the river
weeping
it knows my name

critters

Image: Helen Ward via Magpie Tales

It's always a sight at the trattorie
when wild city critters make a scene

crumbled cake, candelabras
chaos and weasels in starched collars

paper crowns, rumpled nightgowns
won't someone turn that racket down?

reptilian wait staff spin and slither
a tortoise brings breakfast in time for dinner

but there...
in the midst of all the clatter
a honey badger pot scrubber
for whom the noise doesn't matter

he keeps to himself, he doesn't care
doesn't give a whit about the whole affair

he sticks to his task, gets it done
then leaves the city moon for the country sun

monhegan

she was beauty ripe
golden,
delicious
in a place where
life has teeth
and apples
are hard to come by

she was
the siren
in the salty song
of the lobsterman
and sunrise
on the tip of
an artist's brush

she was a slice
of time come of age
here, on Monhegan
until, without signal
she was gone
painted into myth
like the hermit of Manana

what may flowers bring?

wild haired dandelion
sunshine freckles
spill
out of hole-in-the-bucket
rain cloud promises
running
shoelaces untied

impatient green eyed jungle vines
tangle up
a messy pigtail
of nobody's home knock knock jokes
giggled to a monkey
playing matchbook love songs
on a toy piano

close your eyes
now
or much later
and sing unbelievably off key
to the stracciatella cirrus sky
that you'll really miss me
when I'm gone
